dymek.jpg Few informations - from the ZOO Director - about our polar bear's exhibition.  Friday, 17 May 2013 10:54
From time to time we receive critical comments about our polar bear exhibit. We understand it, but we want to explain reason of arrival this species to our zoo. The Polar bear Rock was built in 50* - and it was one of the most modern exhibit these times. Now it looks not as good as we want but we have plans to built new exhibit as fast as it will be possible. The exhibit looks bad but it meets all the standards set by international and local organizations such as EAZA.
We are satisfied that coordinator made a decision that our zoo is one of the best to give shelter for 2 young males which can’t stay longer with their mother. Scientists alert that these species can disappeared from nature in next fifty years. Zoological gardens decided to made special program of rescuing them called EEP. The captive population is not so big, and babies appeared very rarely, but last two years was very good – there was more youngsters than everybody suppose and it occurred that there is 5 young males that need immediately new house. In most zoological gardens these species is kept in heard made of one male, one female and youngsters, or one sex groups made of young males or females. When youngsters become adult parents drive of them. Gregor and Aleut from Nuremberg Zoo found themselves in these situation. Their mother become aggressive for them, and they have to be separated. In these situation Nuremberg Zoo need to found new house for young polar bears, and we decided to help.
Now they live on exhibit which covers an area of 330 m2 (land), with big moat - 230 m2. Standards made by EAZA permits area of 300 m2, for youngsters nearly separated from mother, with 70 m2 moat where they can swim. Our moat is 1,6 meters deep so our zoo meets the standards. After moving out our two brown bear females to other zoo (which we planned to do in summer/autumn), and obviously after required repairs polar bears receive second part of exhibit – in a result whole area available for them will be about 1000 m2.
Before arrival of Gregor and Aleut we carefully washed and disinfected Polar Bear Rock, we added lots of logs, and special toys which will be good enrichment for animals. We cut out few rotten poplars which can be dangerous for animals during storm.  During warm days they can hide inside shelter where temperature is from 15 to– in nature polar bears can be found during summer in Churchill (Canada) – where it can be even 260C. Shelters are open 24 hours per day so sometimes our bears can’t be seen by viewers, for what we apologize. In warm days we give for our animals ice blocks witch treats.
Gregor and Aleuts are in good hands. 4 zookeepers keep watch over their wellness, they have daily wet care and continual attention of the management. Now we are trying to do our best to made new exhibit. We take all the help, and answer all your questions and concerns.

The 5th Run Around the ZOO passed. The winner was leading from start to finish but the fighting was fierce. Some runners were dressed in interesting zoological costumes. We could also see some parents running with their childs in special strollers. It was a real fun, as always!
